Sinus surgery
Do you have sinus problems that interfere with your daily life?
If you are dealing with chronic pain in the face and head, difficulty breathing or frequent infections on a daily basis, it may be time to consider sinonasal surgery as a permanent solution. When conservative methods – such as medications and therapies – no longer bring relief, sinus surgery may be the most effective step towards improving your quality of life.
What is sinonasal surgery?
Sinus surgery or sinonasal surgery is a medical procedure designed to treat chronic sinus conditions, such as sinusitis, nasal polyps, or anatomical abnormalities that interfere with the normal functioning of the airways. These problems can cause long-term problems, including persistent nasal congestion, pain, fatigue, and a reduced sense of smell, which significantly impairs daily functioning.
At Royal Cosmetic Surgery in Belgrade, we use modern, proven effective methods of treating sinus problems, including FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) and classic surgery. In this article, we will explain in detail the differences between the methods, what the procedure looks like, what you can expect during recovery, and why Royal Belgrade is the right choice for you.
Types of Sinus Surgery: FESS and Classic Method
There are two basic methods of sinus surgery that are most commonly used in modern medicine – functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and classic surgery. Although both are effective, the difference lies in the approach, scope of the intervention, and recovery time.
FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses an endoscope – a thin, flexible instrument with a camera – to provide a precise view of the sinuses without the need for external incisions. This method is most often used in mild to moderate cases, when there is a need to remove polyps, treat infections, or open blocked ducts.
The advantages of the FESS method include:
- Minimally invasive – no external incisions or visible scars
- Faster recovery – patients usually return to daily activities in 7–10 days
- Reduced pain and swelling – thanks to the precision of the procedure
- High degree of precision – the camera allows the doctor to have a clear view in real time
Classical sinus surgery involves an open approach, i.e. larger incisions, and is used in cases where the sinuses are seriously diseased, when there is a more complex anatomy, pronounced deformities or when additional correction of the nasal septum is needed. Although the recovery with this method is longer, it allows for a more comprehensive surgical approach and solving more complex problems.
The advantages of the classical method are:
- The possibility of performing more serious procedures and anatomical corrections
- Direct access to the sinuses and a larger area affected by the disease
- Wider surgical control in complicated cases
What does the procedure look like?
Regardless of the type of procedure, sinus surgery is most often performed under general anesthesia, so the patient does not feel pain or is conscious during the procedure. In the FESS method, an endoscope is inserted through the nostrils, and the doctor uses a camera to precisely identify and remove diseased tissue, polyps, or blockages that are interfering with normal airflow.
In classic surgery, a direct approach is used through small incisions to provide greater visibility and access to the problem areas. Depending on the patient's condition, the doctor may correct a deviated nasal septum, remove thickened tissues, or widen the sinus passages for better drainage and breathing.
Duration of surgery and hospital stay
The procedure usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the severity of the case and the type of surgery. The most commonly performed FESS procedure takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, while more complex classic procedures can take up to 2 hours. After surgery, the patient stays in the hospital for several hours for observation, and in most cases can be discharged home the same day. In more complex cases, a shorter hospital stay of 24 hours is recommended.
Recovery and Postoperative Care
Recovery varies depending on the type of surgery. After the FESS method, most patients return to normal activities in 7–10 days. During this period, mild bleeding, nasal congestion, or swelling may occur, which is completely expected and transient. It is very important to avoid physical exertion, smoking, staying in dusty areas, and exposure to allergies.
With classic surgery, recovery is somewhat longer – most often between 10 and 14 days. Patients are advised to be more cautious during the first weeks and regularly use the prescribed therapy, as well as regular check-ups with the surgeon to monitor the healing process.
In both cases, at Aesthetic Surgery Royal we provide comprehensive postoperative care – including written recovery guidelines, regular check-ups, and the constant availability of our medical team for all questions and concerns.
